An oil seal, also known as a shaft seal, is used to prevent the leakage of lubricants such as oil or grease along a rotating shaft. These seals are commonly found in equipment like gearboxes and hydraulic systems. Their primary functions are to retain lubrication, prevent external contaminants from entering, and ensure reliable operation even under pressure. Oil seals are made up of three main components: the sealing element, the metal case, and the garter spring. The sealing element is typically constructed from materials like nitrile rubber (NBR), polyacrylate (PA), silicone (SI), or fluorocarbon (FKM), each chosen based on temperature range, chemical exposure, and operating conditions. For example, nitrile is widely used for its oil resistance, while fluorocarbon offers superior performance in high-temperature and chemically harsh environments. The metal case provides structural support and is usually made from carbon steel or stainless steel, depending on environmental requirements such as corrosion resistance. The garter spring applies pressure to the sealing lip, ensuring consistent contact with the shaft. Oil seals also come in various lip designs, including single, double, and springless types, each suited for different sealing needs such as low-pressure environments or protection against dust and contaminants.
